Game Recap
Coming of a 2-0 start, East Central traveled Saturday to Indy for the six team 2013 Southport Invitational, including Centerville, East Central, Lutheran, Scecina Memorial, Southport, and Tri-West. The pool play format tournament had the Trojans paired up with Centerville and Lutheran to begin play. East Central finished third going 2-1, defeating Centerville and Scecina, losing to Lutheran. EC was 1-1 in pool play and won the crossover match against Scecina.

EC handled Centerville 2-0 in the opener 25-23 and 25-22. EC trailed early in game one, until Kristen Weber back to back kills pulled the Trojans even at 6-6. Teams traded several points then EC fell behind 15-10 on a Bulldog run, a pair of kills and a block by Nicole Sandmann got the Trojans to within two, but the Trojans could not get on top until late when a Maria Shoemaker smash tied the game at 22-22. EC closed out game one 25-23 on a pair of kills, one by Sandmann and the final by Weber.

Game two was similar to game one as the Trojans trailed by five at 10-5, then by six at 15-9 when the march back began. Four straight kills capped by a Josie Andres block got the Trojans to within one at 15-14. EC tied the game at 16-16 and never trialed the rest of the way, the final run highlighted by solid play by Kaylyn Gindling, Emily Egbers and Olivia Fette. EC winning 25-22.

EC squared up with a very good Lutheran and first team All-State selections MH Casey Koons and S Casey Colgate in second of three on the day. The Lady Saints high powered front line attack proved too much for the Trojans, losing 2-1; 25-23, 8-25, and 9-15.

Game one went point for point as no team lead by more than two the entire game. A kill by Sarah Schuman tied the game at 22-22, then a smash by 6'1'' Koons put the Saints back in front 23-22. The Trojans went back in front 24-23 on a hammer by Andres leading to a Lutheran timeout. Mary Baker ensued with a game ending ace, Trojans winning game one 25-23.

EC was dominated in game two start to finish. A 7-1 Lutheran run to start the game set the tone the entire way as the Trojans could not stop any Saint runs. Trojans losing 25-8.

The third and deciding game found the Trojans behind 3-1, Shoemaker and Fette kills rallied EC to tie the game at 4-4. Back to back errors put EC down by two, then three straight points put the Trojans up 7-6. Lutheran rallied on a 9-2 run to close out the final deciding game 15-9.

The cossover game matched the Trojans against Scecina. EC winning 2-1; 22-25, 25-16, 15-8.

EC got off to a good 3-0 start behind a Sandmann kill and a pair of Egbers aces, but the Lady Crusaders were able to fight back and tie the score at 4-4. EC rallied multiple times to push the lead to 4 but could not put away Scecina, back to back Trojan errors tied the game at 18-18. Teams traded points to a 22-22 tie and an EC timeout. The Crusaders scored three straight off the timeout to take game one 25-22.

After trading points early on in game two to a 6-6 tie, EC went on a 9-3 run behind a pair of Fette aces and kills by Andres and Shoemaker to push the lead to 15-9. A Scecina timeout could not stop the Trojan attack as solid plays from Chloe Wilhelm, Stacey Newport, and Amanda Richter held off any Crusader threat down the stretch, Trojans cruising 25-16.

The deciding game three was dominated by EC early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on a Shoemaker kill and Sandmann block. The lead got cut to two at 5-3, Egbers and Fette assists fed the balanced Trojan attack to pull away and cruise to a 15-8 victory.
