|EC traveled to rival Batesville for EIAC battle of conference unbeatens.
Bulldogs winning in extended play 3-2 in an intense match-up; 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 17-15.
EC opened game one 2-0, however multiple Trojan early errors allowed Batesville to take lead at 5-3. Teams traded points and errors all the way to a 11-11 tie. As teams seemed to settle in, EC put a 3-0 mini run together on kills by Kristen Weber and Josie Andres, with a Nicole Sandmann block to set the score at 14-11. EC maintained the 3 point lead all the way to 19-16 as teams traded points highlighted by Bulldog smashes from Bailey Baumer and Anna Meyer, and a pair of Trojan hammers from Maria Shoemaker. EC extended the lead to four 20-16 on a Sandmann kill leading to a Batesville timeout. EC ran out game one on a 5-0 streak behind a Olivia Fette kill and block, winning 25-16.
An error laden game two had 9 lead changes and 11 ties as the teams traded points and kills to a 15-15 tie. Batesville offense was lead early on by Baumer and Rylee Goldsmith and matched by a balanced EC front line attack. Three straight Trojan errors lead to an EC timeout at 18-15. The momentum stayed in Batesville favor out of the timeout as the Bulldogs ran off 3 more to a 21-15. An Emily Egbers ace got the Trojans to within four at 21-17, but Batesville closed out game two on a Goldsmith kill and block, winning 25-19.
In similar exciting fashion (10 ties / 7 lead changes) no team lead by more than two points early on in game three, until back to back Batesville kills put the Bulldogs in front 13-10. EC responded with hammers from Andres and Sarah Schuman to pull within one again at 13-12. Baumer spiked Batesville to a 3-0 run causing an EC timeout at 16-12. Weber and Goldsmith traded kills for each team as the Bulldogs maintained the four point margin at 20-16. EC rallied on Sandmann back to back smashes, combined with back to back blocks to get the Trojans even at 20-20. A Baumer kill again ignited a 3-0 run for a Batesville 23-20 lead. Another EC timeout allowed the Trojans to get within one at 23-22, but the rally fell short. Bulldogs winning game three 25-22.
With their backs against the wall in game four the Trojans smashed out to an early 3-0 lead, only to see it quickly erased by a 3-0 Batesville run. Teams slugged it out to a 9-9 tie, then EC behind Schuman and Weber kills went in front at 12-9, leading to a Bulldog timeout. EC rallied to their largest lead at 15-10 on a Kaylyn Gindling ace. The Bulldogs started the fight back behind Goldsmith and Madi Oesterling kills going back in front at 19-18. The Trojans quickly answered with a Schuman kill and combo block of a Baummer smash attempt, regaining the lead again at 20-19. An Egbers ace and another Schuman kill propelled EC to a 22-19 lead. Batesville closed to within one at 23-22, then a service error set the sore at 24-22, and ended on a hammer by Sandmann. EC winning a must have game four 25-22.
The momentum carried over to game five as EC shot out to a early 5-0 lead. The Trojans maintained the five point spread at 8-3 on a Shoemaker kill, until Batesville battled back on a 6-3 run to get within two at 11-9, then back to back Batesville kills tied the score at 11-11. From that point on teams traded kills, Sandmann and Andres for EC, Baummer and Goldsmith for Batesville, all the way to a 14-14 tie. A Baummer kill put the bulldogs up one and ended on a smash that appeared to sail out long, the officials calling the ball tipped at the net. The Bulldogs win the deciding game in extras 17-15.
