ECHS XC at Connersville

There are mornings when you get off the bus, feel the crisp air hit your face, and just know it’s going to be a special day. That was exactly the feeling on Saturday morning at Connersville for the Trojans. The thermometer hovered right around 55 degrees—absolutely ideal running weather. Now, anyone who knows cross country in southeastern Indiana knows that the Connersville course isn't exactly built for speed. It’s a true, traditional cross country course that makes you work for every single second. But our East Central squad didn't care about the course's reputation; they came out determined to make their own statements. The ladies set the tone for the day in spectacular fashion. From the gun, Lily Gambrel (Senior) and Alyssa Donawerth (Junior) established themselves at the front of the pack, commanding the race and finishing as a dominant one-two punch with Lily taking the individual crown in 21:09 and Alyssa right behind her in 21:44. But cross country is a team sport, and championship trophies are won by the depth of the pack. Lydia Middendorf fought hard for an 8th-place finish, and right on her heels was Josie West, who ran the race of her life to take 9th place in a personal-best 23:54. Audrey Engel crossed the line to seal our scoring five, leading a relentless wave of red and black that included Grace Jacobsen and Layla Gambrel, who shattered her own personal record with a spectacular 25:30. When the final tallies were posted, our girls stood firmly at the top of the podium, capturing the team championship with 31 points. With the energy high, our boys took the line next, facing a fierce Richmond squad who we have seen several times previously this season. Senior Abram Hiltz (Senior) led our charge with a 4th-place individual performance, clocking an 18:04. Behind him, the young talent and veteran depth of our program showed up in a massive way. Freshman Cooper Middendorf and senior Anthony Toler worked together to finish 8th and 9th, while freshman Bentley Reinier, a dual sport athlete- all playing soccer, grabbed 10th. Right there to lock down our scoring positions was Robert Asbach (a transfer from Harrison), who left everything on the course to secure an 11th-place finish and a Season Best of 19:53. The personal milestones didn't stop there. Spencer Lyon crossed the line, closely followed by a pack of Trojans who refused to yield an inch. Freshman Ethan Washum fought through the final stretch to secure a new personal best of 20:27, finishing just a tenth of a second ahead of junior Haydn Nix, who also logged his best time ever at 20:27 (Washum and Nix have a serious battel each race!). Freshman Charlie Jackson kept the momentum rolling by carving out his own career-best time of 20:54, and junior Jonathan Lee showed incredible heart later in the pack, destroying his previous mark to finish in a personal-best 24:36. Though Richmond edged us out for the top spot, our boys secured a proud 2nd-place team finish. More importantly, leaving a notoriously tough course with a team trophy and seven individual lifetime personal records tells me everything I need to know about the grit of this team. We are peaking at the right time, and as a coach, I couldn't be prouder of the heart they displayed out there today.
