The East Central High School cross country program engineered a stellar performance under the bright skies of a cool, sunny Saturday morning at the IHSAA Sectional 18 Championship in Rushville. Driven by an onslaught of lifetime personal records as both the Trojan boys and girls squads punch their tickets to the regional round. The girls met their expectations and Lily Gambrel made history. The ECHS girls entered the starting boxes predicted to place second as a team, and they executed that plan flawlessly, capturing the runner-up trophy with 76 points. The day was anchored by a historic race from senior Lily Gambrel, who shattered her previous best mark by 14 seconds to cross the finish line in an elite 4th place overall at 19:48. This blistering performance officially cements Gambrel's name on the prestigious East Central all-time Top 10 list. The girls flexed their depth by putting three runners in the top 25 overall: Lily Gambrel – 4th place (19:48, dropped 14 seconds) Alyssa Donawerth – 8th place (20:43.1) Josie West – 22nd place (22:11, dropped 7 seconds) The standard of excellence was contagious across the entire lineup, with five total girls secure lifetime PRs. Audrey Engel slashed a massive 23 seconds off her time to clock a 23:36, Grace Jacobsen dropped 13 seconds (23:44), and Josie Ryan fought to lower her mark by 2 seconds (23:55). Only two girls on the entire roster finished outside of PR territory! While the girls executed their predicted podium finish, the ECHS boys' team rewrote the pre-meet script. On paper, the Trojans were projected to fight for a modest 4th or 5th place finish. Instead, they ran with zeal, executing a brilliant pack-strategy to shatter projections and seize 3rd place overall with 108 points. Even sweeter for the Trojans was the team score margin: they decisively defeated the local powerhouse, Batesville, who fell behind to finish 5th. Just like the girls, the boys utilized a dominant front-pack strategy to put three runners in the top 25: Abram Hiltz – 9th place (17:27) Cooper Middendorf – 18th place (17:51, a massive 28-second drop) Anthony Toler – 24th place (18:04, dropped 3 seconds) The time drops across the boys' roster were staggering, with five runners scoring lifetime PRs. Senior Robert Asbach delivered the run of the day, tearing 46 seconds off his career best to finish 31st in 18:25. Freshman Bentley Reinier stepped up huge under sectional pressure, dropping 31 seconds (18:35), while senior Spencer Lyon dug deep to slice 13 seconds off his baseline clocking at 18:38. With only two boys missing out on personal records, the collective team energy carried the Trojans straight onto the regional podium. Leaving Rushville with two qualifying teams, an all-time Top 10 marker and Lily Gambrel, and ten massive individual personal breakthroughs, East Central Cross Country heads into the Regional with roaring momentum. The Trojans race the IHSAA Regional next Saturday at Columbus North.
